The City Government of Manila has announced a ₱50,000 grant for each of 35 participating fashion designers as part of this year’s Flores de Mayo celebration, aimed at revitalizing the city’s cultural and fashion industries.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso made the announcement during a press conference for the event themed “Dalisay at Halimuyak,” scheduled for May 3 at 3:00 p.m. The procession, known as the Sagala, will begin in front of the Manila Hotel and pass through the Quirino Grandstand and Roxas Boulevard, before returning to the starting point.
The initiative is supported by the private sector and the Fashion Designers of the Philippines, led by its president, Catholic Mora Capistrano, and director, Raymond Villanueva. Organizers said the project aims to promote local talent while generating proceeds for two beneficiary foundations.
Officials emphasized that the event is designed not only to highlight fashion design but also to strengthen Manila’s cultural identity and boost tourism. Mayor Domagoso noted that the celebration is expected to attract both local and international visitors, contributing to increased tourism activity in the capital.
During the festivities, Mayor Domagoso will serve as Hermano Mayor, while his wife, Mrs. Dynee Domagoso, will be Hermana Mayora.
Flores de Mayo is a month-long Filipino Catholic tradition held every May in honor of the Virgin Mary, featuring daily floral offerings that culminate in the Santacruzan, a colorful religious and historical procession.
