The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) monitored a total of 35 Chinese vessels operating around the West Philippine Sea (WPS) from September 15 to 21.
According to the AFP, the figure was lower than the 48 Chinese maritime vessels monitored during the previous seven-day period.
Despite the decrease, the largest concentration was recorded around Bajo de Masinloc, where 10 Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels and six vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) were monitored.
The AFP also monitored Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) and PLAN vessels around other critical maritime features, including Panatag Shoal, Ayungin Shoal, Escoda Shoal, and Pag-asa Island.
Except for Pag-asa Island, where the Philippines maintains effective occupation, the other maritime features mentioned are located within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The AFP has repeatedly maintained that China’s presence and operations within the Philippines’ EEZ are contrary to the 2016 Arbitral Award, which invalidated China’s sweeping claims over the South China Sea.
