Around 300 jeepney operators are set to conduct a mass filing for the renewal of their provisional authority, according to transport group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON), according to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort.
PISTON National Coordinator Cerilo Latoreno told DZRH News that the operators, including members based in Pasay City, will collectively submit their applications as unconsolidated jeepney operators.
Prior to the filing, the group plans to stage a protest in front of the Department of Transportation (DOTr). After the demonstration, they will proceed to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to formally submit their renewal documents.
Latoreno said the group will also call on the government to restore the five-year franchise period for jeepney operators and push for a rehabilitation program for existing public utility vehicles instead of full replacement.
He added that their petition for a temporary restraining order against the implementation of the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) remains pending before the Supreme Court.
PISTON has consistently opposed mandatory consolidation and vehicle replacement under the modernization program, arguing that it threatens the livelihood of small-scale drivers and operators.
