Three suspects have been formally charged with two counts of murder in connection with the killing of Police Staff Sergeant Major (PSMS) Diane Marie Mollenido and her son, John Ysmael, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) confirmed.
The three accused—couple Pia Katrina Panganiban, and dismissed Caloocan police officer Christian Panganiban, and their helper Gil Valdemoro Jr.—were charged after the investigating prosecutor found prima facie evidence with reasonable certainty of conviction against them.
The prosecutors recommended no bail for the accused.
According to official statements, the charges stem from an in-depth and thorough investigation into the fatal shooting of the police officer and her son.
However, Maribel Suarez Panganiban, sister of Christian, who was earlier named as a suspect, has been cleared of all charges and will now serve as an "ordinary witness" in the case.
Meanwhile, the charges against Diane's husband, John Mollenido were also dropped after the court granted a motion to remove his name from the list of respondents. Initial allegations against him were based on statements made by Pia Katrina, who claimed that Mollenido—her godfather—was the mastermind behind the killings. However, prosecutors later found insufficient basis to pursue charges against him.
The QCPD reported the recovery of additional evidence related to the deaths after authorities executed a search warrant at the residence of suspects Pia and Christian Panganiban in Barangay San Agustin, Novaliches, Quezon City.
According to the authorities, seized items were turned over to the Quezon City District Forensic Unit (QCDFU) for examination, while two CCTV units were handed to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) for analysis.
Earlier, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said the double murder case is now considered “case closed” after authorities identified and filed charges against the suspects believed to be responsible for the killings.
