Three passengers remain missing after a motorbanca capsized in Mapanuepe Lake in San Marcelino, Zambales, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Friday.

PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said search and rescue operations were continuing for the three passengers, including one adult and two children, who remained missing as of Aug. 28.

The boat was carrying 13 passengers who were returning home after receiving medicines and vaccinations at a community health center when it capsized on Aug. 27.

“Habang pauwi na sila, according sa mga survivors ay naka-encounter sila ng biglaang paglakas ng hangin at malakas na alon,” Cayabyab said in a radio interview.

Six passengers — three adults and three children — died, while four others survived, according to the PCG.

PCG divers, along with personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local disaster risk reduction and management office, took part in the search.

Earlier Friday, the PCG conducted a seaborne patrol and assessed the incident area before launching underwater search and rescue operations.

The underwater search was temporarily suspended after divers encountered zero visibility because of muddy water in the area, Cayabyab said.

Strong winds and intermittent rain brought by the continuing effects of the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, also hampered rescue efforts.

The PCG said the search and rescue operation will resume once weather and water conditions improve.

The agency said the operation is part of its efforts under its Organized National Engagement (ONE) at Sea strategic concept and Intensified Community Assistance, Awareness, Response, and Enforcement (iCARE) campaign.
