The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued show-cause orders and imposed a 90-day preventive suspension on the licenses of three drivers involved in an apparent road-racing incident that led to a multi-vehicle crash along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue in Quezon City on December 8.

Dashcam footage and a Quezon City Police District (QCPD) investigation showed a Toyota Fortuner counterflowing and sideswiping a Yamaha Mio Aerox motorcycle, injuring its rider.

A speeding Ford Raptor, seemingly chasing the Fortuner, stopped abruptly to avoid the fallen rider and was rear-ended by a Toyota Hilux also involved in the chase.

In its show-cause orders, the LTO noted that the Raptor and Hilux were “actively chasing each other” when the Hilux crashed into the Raptor, injuring the Raptor’s driver and damaging both vehicles.

The drivers have been ordered to appear at the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division on December 11 and to submit verified explanations on why they should not be charged with Reckless Driving and deemed Improper Persons to Operate a Motor Vehicle under RA 4136. The Fortuner driver may also face a charge for Driving Against Traffic.

All three vehicles have been placed under alarm pending the outcome of the investigation. LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao reiterated that counterflowing and reckless driving endanger lives and will be met with strict enforcement.
