TRIGGER WARNING: This report contains information about the death of children.

Two elementary students died after being electrocuted during a Color and Bubble Fun Run at Cauayan South Central School in Cauayan City, Isabela, on Saturday, October 3, police said.

The Department of Education (DepEd) in Cauayan City confirmed that two students died following the incident, while two other students who were also affected survived.

Investigators said the four students were rushed to hospitals for medical attention.

According to Isabela Police Provincial Office Director Police Col. Manuel Bringas, the incident occurred at around 6:20 a.m. during the school’s fun run.

Police said the students were at an area covered with foam when an apparent electrical short circuit or grounding occurred, causing them to be electrocuted.

Meanwhile, DepEd Cauayan expressed condolences to the families of the two students who died and said it is coordinating with the local government and other concerned agencies to provide assistance and support to those affected.

The department also said a “fact-finding investigation is underway“ to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a review of the activity, safety measures, equipment used and the roles of those involved.

“Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” DepEd said.

Meanwhile, Cauayan South Central School expressed its condolences to the bereaved families and called on parents, students and other members of the school community to refrain from spreading unverified information and speculation while the investigation is ongoing.

DepEd also urged the public to “respect the privacy of the affected children and their families and refrain from sharing unverified names, photographs or videos“ related to the incident.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the incident.
