Two police officers were injured and four individuals were arrested as tensions flared during a rally attended by members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) near the EDSA People Power Monument on Tuesday, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) confirmed.
According to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort, the NCRPO said that while initial reports placed the number of arrests at five, official figures show only four individuals were taken into custody.
NCRPO spokesperson Police Major Jazel Asilo said one of the injured officers, a policewoman, was pinned during an incident involving a tourist bus allegedly used by rally participants. The vehicle reportedly moved back and forth intentionally, causing the injury.
Asilo added that no injuries were reported among the demonstrators.
A third police officer was also reported to have experienced trauma amid the escalating tension, she said.
Among those arrested was the driver of the tourist bus involved in the incident. Another individual was accused of punching a police officer, according to authorities.
More than 10,000 INC members gathered along EDSA for the rally. Police said over 3,000 officers were deployed to secure the area, particularly along White Plains Avenue.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the gathering proceeds.
