Two workers were confirmed dead after a road excavation site collapsed in a subdivision in Barangay Pamplona Dos, Las Piñas, authorities said Monday.
Fire Superintendent Sonny Cario, city fire marshal, said the bodies of two casualties were retrieved at around 6:44 a.m. on Monday (June 29), following overnight operations at the site, where a portion of a road under excavation gave way on Sunday.
Police and water concessionaire Maynilad Water Services Inc. both described the case as an accident. Authorities said the collapse occurred at a dig site linked to an ongoing water-related project.
Initial reports indicated that four individuals survived the incident, with one injured, while two others were initially unaccounted for before being confirmed among the fatalities.
In a statement, Maynilad said emergency response teams were immediately deployed and coordinated with the Bureau of Fire Protection, local officials, and disaster response units. Retrieval operations were led by the fire bureau.
“Our thoughts are with the workers and their families during this difficult time,” the company said, adding that it is working with its contractor to provide assistance and support to those affected.
The company also said work at the site has been suspended and that it is fully cooperating with authorities investigating the cause of the collapse.
Police said an investigation is ongoing to determine what led to the incident.
