Two people were killed, while two others were injured after a cargo truck lost control and fell into a ravine along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Silangan Malicboy, Pagbilao, on Wednesday morning, March 18.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Pagbilao, the accident occurred at around 10:15 a.m. along the Old Zigzag Road, a section known for its steep and winding terrain. Initial investigation revealed that the winged truck, loaded with animal feed, was traveling downhill from the southbound lane toward the Atimonan area when the driver allegedly lost control, possibly due to brake failure.
The truck first rammed into a parked multicab on the roadside, dragging it several meters due to the impact. It then crashed into a coconut tree before plunging into a nearby river and overturning.
Authorities confirmed that the multicab driver died on the spot after sustaining severe head and body injuries. The truck’s helper also perished after being pinned inside the vehicle. Meanwhile, the truck driver and a passenger of the multicab were injured and immediately rushed to the Quezon Medical Center for treatment.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, while authorities reminded motorists to exercise caution when traversing the hazardous Zigzag Road, especially heavy vehicles carrying cargo.
