Two personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) were injured following the accidental detonation of explosive material inside a Coast Guard barracks in Zamboanga City on Saturday night, October 24.
In a press release issued by the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM), the incident occurred at around 10:39 p.m. at the barracks of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit–Southwestern Mindanao (EODU-SWM), located within the Port Police Compound at the Zamboanga City International Pier along Corcuera Street, Port Area.
Initial reports showed that the personnel were preparing for the upcoming Explosive Ordnance Reconnaissance Agent (EORA) Training when low-explosive material intended for instructional purposes accidentally detonated.
Both personnel were immediately brought to Ciudad Medical Hospital for medical attention. They were conscious upon arrival and are currently undergoing treatment and monitoring.
The CGDSWM clarified that the incident was not related to any terrorist activity, emphasizing that it was an accidental detonation during the handling and preparation of explosive materials within PCG premises.
“The PCG remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of its personnel,” the district said, adding that the incident is under thorough investigation.
The CGDSWM also urged the public to remain calm as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
