At least 19 Labor Day protests across the country drew a combined 4,375 participants on Friday, May 1, with all gatherings remaining generally peaceful, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

In an initial assessment, PNP spokesperson Randulf T. Tuaño said two of the 19 monitored rallies concluded early, while 17 others were ongoing as of the morning.

Authorities reported no major untoward incidents as various labor groups and militant organizations staged demonstrations to mark International Workers’ Day.

Protest actions were held in several key locations, including Mendiola, Welcome Rotonda, and Marikina Cityhood Park, where groups converged to air their demands on wages, labor rights, and social protection.

PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered the Manila Police District to personally engage with demonstrators, emphasizing coordination to prevent the possible infiltration of outside agitators.

Police maintained a visible presence in rally areas as part of standard security protocols, ensuring orderly conduct of the protests while upholding the public’s right to peaceful assembly.
