A 16-year-old pregnant teenager, working as a commercial sex worker, has become the youngest recorded HIV-positive case in Iloilo City, health authorities reported. Dr. Odette Villaruel, HIV coordinator and head of the Social Hygienic Clinic, confirmed the diagnosis following a routine check-up and testing conducted by the City Health Office.
The teen’s partner has also tested positive for HIV, raising concerns about transmission within young populations. Dr. Villaruel added that a growing number of young residents, including students, are being diagnosed with HIV.
She also warned about the increasing incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the city, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, underscoring the need for regular testing, public awareness, and preventive measures.
