Twelve people have been reported dead, eight remain missing, and 11 others were injured due to the combined effects of tropical cyclones 'Luis,' 'Maymay' and the enhanced southwest monsoon or Habagat, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Monday.
Speaking to reporters at Malacañang Palace after hours of situation briefings with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., Office of Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Laurence Mina said the figures were based on reports from the Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and CALABARZON as of 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10.
Mina said the reported causes of death included drowning, landslides, rockslides, fallen trees, and electrocution.
However, he added that authorities are still validating the reported casualties.
Four people were among those killed in a landslide in Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, on Sunday night, Aug. 9. Three of the fatalities were young students.
Meanwhile, the OCD said more than 1.3 million individuals, or 384,520 families, have been affected by the enhanced Habagat in the National Capital Region and Regions I, II, III, V, VI, IX, CAR, CALABARZON, and MIMAROPA.
At least 58,655 individuals from 16,135 families were being served in 624 evacuation centers, while 39,290 individuals from 11,360 families remain displaced outside evacuation centers.
The OCD also reported 367 houses have been damaged, including 27 totally damaged and 340 partially damaged, in Regions I, III, CAR, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and Region VI.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said weather conditions are expected to gradually improve starting Tuesday, although rains may persist in some provinces until Wednesday.
PAGASA also noted that Metro Manila and nearby provinces received more than a month's worth of rainfall in just nine days, from Aug. 1 to 9.
While rains are expected to continue in some areas, PAGASA said their intensity is likely to decrease in the coming days.
