Four people, including the truck driver, were confirmed dead while eight others were injured after a 10-wheeler truck rammed through 11 vehicles and three houses in Barangay Isabang, Lucena City, on Saturday night, October 11.
According to an initial investigation by the Lucena City Police Station, the truck was traveling along Maharlika Highway toward the city proper when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
Due to its high speed, the right side of the truck mounted the gutter and smashed several parked vehicles along the roadside. The impact caused some vehicles to burst into flames before the truck finally crashed into three houses, resulting in heavy property damage.
Authorities said the fatalities included the truck driver and a tricycle passenger caught in the collision. Eight others sustained injuries and were immediately brought to nearby hospitals for treatment.
By 7:00 a.m. Sunday, October 12, rescuers recovered another body trapped under one of the destroyed houses, raising the death toll to four.
Lucena City Police Chief PLTCOL Ryan M. Hernandez said the case will proceed despite the death of the truck driver, adding that charges will be filed against the trucking company responsible.
Authorities continue to investigate whether mechanical failure or human negligence caused the fatal incident.
