Tropical Storm "Basyang" remains strong and is accelerating as it nears eastern Mindanao, with tropical cyclone wind signals now raised in multiple areas nationwide.

As of 8:00 a.m., the state weather agency reported that the center of the storm was last located about 385 km east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Forecasters said Basyang may make its first landfall over Surigao del Sur between tonight and early Friday morning, February 6.

"Basyang may further intensify prior to its initial landfall. It will then slightly weaken as it interacts with the landmass but it will likely remain a tropical storm. Further weakening into a tropical depression is forecast by Saturday and will be downgraded into a low pressure area by Monday (09 February)," the state weather bureau said.

It could make a second landfall over Negros Oriental tomorrow afternoon, before potentially affecting Palawan on Saturday, February 7.

Basyang is packing maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h, and is moving west-southwestward at 20 km/h.

Authorities warned that strong winds and heavy rainfall may be experienced even outside areas directly along the storm’s forecast track, raising the risk of flooding, landslides, and rough sea conditions.
