The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong (HKPCG) has confirmed the death of a Filipina overseas worker following the massive fire that swept through the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po earlier this week.
In a statement released Saturday, the Consulate expressed condolences over the tragedy, noting that the victim had been working far from home in hopes of providing a better future for her family.
“The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong confirms the passing of an overseas Filipino worker from the Tai Po fire incident,” the statement read.
“Far from her native home, she had made innumerable sacrifices to provide a better life for her family. The Consulate General extends our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones at this trying time. May she rest in peace.”
The fire, which began on Wednesday, November 26, at the Wang Fuk Court development, rapidly engulfed seven of the eight 32-storey towers in the residential complex.
Local authorities mounted large-scale rescue operations as dense smoke and flames spread quickly through multiple blocks.
Since the incident, the Consulate has been conducting verification efforts and coordinating with Hong Kong authorities.
As of November 29, officials confirmed that 79 Filipinos are safe and accounted for, one injured Filipino national is under medical care, 12 remain for verification, and one fatality has been recorded.
