One of two helpers aboard a wing van truck died after the vehicle crashed into a traffic light post at the intersection of Mindanao and Congressional Avenues in Quezon City on Wednesday morning, according to the Quezon City Police District–Traffic Sector 6.
Police Staff Sergeant Ariel Aguilar said the victim was initially in critical condition before succumbing to his injuries.
The helper reportedly jumped off the moving truck before it slammed into the post while carrying several tons of flour, RH Val Gonzales reported.
According to the investigation, the truck driver admitted that the vehicle’s brakes failed.
“Nawalan kami ng preno, yung pag-apak ko kasi nung una hindi na kumagat, pangalawang apak ko, sinabihan ko ‘yung pahinante ko wala na tayong preno kaya tuloy-tuloy,” the driver said.
“Binuksan ‘yung pinto daw sabi ng isa kong kasama, pahenanteng isa binuksan ‘yung pinto sabay talon,” he added.
Two other passengers, another helper and the driver sustained minor injuries from the crash.
The truck, which came from the North Luzon Expressway and was traveling along Mindanao Avenue, first hit a taxi and another car before crashing into the traffic light post.
Authorities have since cleared the sacks of flour that spilled across the busy intersection.
The truck was reportedly transporting the flour from San Fernando, Pampanga, to Taytay, Rizal, when the accident occurred.
