A passenger jeepney driver was killed while 10 others were injured in a road crash involving a truck along the national highway in Barangay Ibabao, Cuenca, Batangas, early Wednesday morning, August 13.
According to a report from the Cuenca Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at around 4:54. Initial investigation showed that the passenger jeepney was traveling from west to east toward Lipa City when it collided with a caustic powder truck coming from the opposite direction.
Police said the truck encroached on the jeepney's lane while allegedly traveling at high speed in a swerving motion, striking the left side of the jeepney. The impact caused the jeepney, which was carrying several passengers, to overturn.
The jeepney driver sustained severe injuries and was declared dead on arrival at Martin Marasigan District Hospital.
The passengers suffered various injuries and were rushed to Martin Marasigan District Hospital. Some were later transferred to other hospitals for further treatment.
The truck driver, identified as Renato, 48, from Bustos, Bulacan, fled the scene after the incident.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, with repair costs yet to be determined.
Police are continuing their investigation and pursuing the truck driver.
