The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) announced on Wednesday that President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. has tapped retired police official Gil Tisado Torralba as its Deputy Director General for Operations.

In a press release, the agency said Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. received the appointment order dated August 7 from Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla’s office on Tuesday.

Catapang welcomed the appointment of Torralba.

“Torralba’s appointment will give us a big boost due to his experiences as former police superintendent and provincial warden,” he said as quoted by the agency.

The BuCor Director General also said that the appointment of Torralba will be of great help to them as they implement stricter security measures inside jail facilities and are presently in the process of reviewing inmates’ grant of privileges.

Meanwhile, BuCor reported that it has hired 1,000 personnel as of August this year, and another 1,000 will be employed by 2024.

“They will constitute the new blood of BuCor who will regain the trust and confidence of the Filipino people. We will therefore have a total of 3,000 new correction officers by the end of 2024 who will represent the beginning of a reformed BuCor,” Catapang said.
